memorial weekend

we spent our holiday weekend in new mexico, saying goodbye to our dear grandpa (and great-grandpa) fred.  i learned a lot about him, having only known him for a small portion of his 89 years, and the visits were few and far between.  he was a generous man that touched many lives & he will be greatly missed.  as the girls get older, we will have to remind them all about their great-grandpa fred.

Frederick J. Edeskuty, Sr., 89, a resident of Los Alamos for 63 years, passed away on May 10, 2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Alcestis von Edeskuty; brothers, Joseph von Edeskuty and Jack Edeskuty and parents-in-law, Alfred and Adelia Bergren. Fred was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was extremely proud of his children. After receiving his doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering and Physics at the University of Minnesota, he moved his family to New Mexico where he began a 40 year scientific career with the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed at Oak Ridge, Tenn. Fred was passionate about traveling; he traveled all over the world and he loved taking his wife everywhere he went. He will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him and his endless supply of jokes. Fred is survived by his wife, Jeanette Edeskuty of Los Alamos; children, Janet Weigel and husband Paul of Edmond, Okla., Fred Edeskuty and wife Brenda of Jemez Springs, N.M. Sharman Carpenter of Savannah, Texas and Dr. Celeste Raffin and husband Ralph of Park City, Utah; 5 grandsons; 11 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Services will be held at 11 a.m., May 25, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Los Alamos.

soccer party

big sister had her end of the spring season team party today.  the girls got their trophies, ate and played on the playground and in the sand pit.

first tournament

little sister participated in her very first soccer tournament this weekend with the STARS.  this is her first time playing with an academy-level team, and it was intense!!  they had 3 games plus they made it to the championship game.

during the first game saturday morning at 8am, she played about 2 minutes before the half and again at the very end of the game.  we were not really surprised since she is new to the team and not yet at the level of her teammates.  many of these girls have been playing together since they were 4 years old!  our girls won 4-2.  the next game was at 2pm and she played goalie for a good part of the first half.  she played left midfield for some of the second half.  our girls won 5-1.

on sunday, they played again at 8am.  little sister only played a small amount on offense, and the team lost 0-2.  but, they had already earned enough points to play in the championship game at noon.  they faced off against the same team they had just lost to, and the game ended in a tie 1-1.  being the championship, they went into overtime, and after two overtimes, they ended up losing 1-2.  so, a second place trophy and medals for all the girls was what they earned.  a few of her teammates were crying because they did not win, which little sister did not really understand.  she is just in it to play and have fun.  now that she is playing with a much more competitive team, i hope she maintains her happy attitude, whether they win or lose - but that is not likely.  as long as she wants to play and is having fun, that is what matters to me.

and with this lost tooth - #8 - i think she is done for a while...and her smile is balanced yet again.

muffins with mom

 for the second time this week - i've been treated to "muffins with mom" in celebration of mother's day.  this morning was at daycare, and on tuesday it was at school.  it's nice to take a break from all the rushing in the morning and just have an excuse to go into work a bit later than normal.  :-)

bye-bye tooth

little sister was sad last night, as we sat there reading, because she was worried about losing her tooth at school today.  she really wanted one of those tooth-keeper necklaces from the school nurse.  but i think she knew her wiggly tooth would not last until today - and she was right.  she disappeared for about 20 minutes, and then brought me the lost tooth.  so, we delayed putting it under her pillow for one night, and i let her take her tooth to school today to get a necklace.  i will have to make sure, assuming the tooth and necklace make it home today, to keep the necklace in a safe place - cause she's got another loose tooth, and who knows when it will fall out!

high honors

big sister has been named student of the month for may for third grade!  way to go, sweet girl!  i noticed her picture on the bulletin board today while at school for "muffins with mom."

i also noticed that - thanks mostly to grandma w for saving us her box tops - both big & little sister's classes were recognized for collecting the most box tops.  and big sister's class (as 1st place) wins an ice cream party!

teacher appreciation week

our teachers are the best, and we plan to show them how much we appreciate them this week.  each day, the girls are going to spoil them with gifts and little notes of how they are valued.  i got all these ideas online, and they were simple to put together.

tie-dye tradition

once again, i volunteered to tie-dye the t-shirts for the girls' classes for field day.  (am i the only one that ever volunteers for this, or just lucky enough to be picked every time??)

it's really not that hard - it just takes some time.  first you boil the water (3 gallons for little sister and 4 gallons for big sister), mix it with dye & salt, add the shirts and let them sit for 1 hour, rinse and remove the ties, then wash and dry the shirts.  as time consuming as this sounds, at least the students helped by tying their own shirts.  i think that would be very time-consuming for just one person...

by the second batch, i enlisted some help to remove the rubber bands.  it was neat to see how they all turned out.  big sister's are green and little's are teal.  can't wait till friday to see everyone in matching shirts!

season finale

so long to another successful soccer season.  the girls each had their last games today.  little sister scored a goal, giving her 3 or 4 for the whole season.  big sister played goalie, her favorite position.  little sister wants to continue and has been recruited to a summer team, and big sister has decided to hang up her cleats and try out cheer, which begins in july.  she has a few friends from school that do cheer, so we'll see how that goes.  but for now, i am going to enjoy the break from weeknight practices and weekend games. :-)

career day

today was career day & college t-shirt day at school.  little sister met a chef and a nurse and got to hear all about their jobs.  she also saw a fireman and police man.  big sister met a classmate's dad, who is a video game maker, she met an ER doctor, and she heard about the job of a lady who works for the city that is building the new water park.  wonder if they got any ideas for their future professions...
